MP 5810

The Kongsberg MP 5810 is a specialized Operator Station (OS) computer based on the HP RP5 Retail System (Model 5810).1 It serves as the primary processing hub for Human-Machine Interfaces (HMI) in Kongsberg maritime automation and positioning systems.2

While its predecessor, the MP7900. was based on an office-grade chassis, the MP 5810 utilizes a “retail-hardened” chassis designed for 24/7 high-reliability operation, making it better suited for the continuous demands of a ship’s engine control room or bridge.

Technical Specifications

The MP 5810 is typically configured with industrial-grade components to ensure stability across the K-Line product family.3

Connectivity & Port Layout

MP 5810

The MP 5810 is notable for its high number of serial and powered USB ports, which are essential for connecting marine peripherals like trackballs, NMEA sensors, and dedicated control panels.

Network: Dual Gigabit Ethernet ports (Intel I217LM) for redundant Net A and Net B system architectures.4

Video Out: 1x VGA and 1x DisplayPort 1.2 (supports dual independent monitors).

Serial Ports: Up to 3x RS-232 COM ports (often power-configurable to 5V/12V for specialized marine hardware).

Specialized I/O: Can be fitted with expansion cards for CAN bus or Profibus communication depending on the vessel’s specific configuration.5

System Applications

You will find the MP 5810 acting as the “brain” for the following systems:

K-Chief 600 / 700: Alarm Monitoring & Control System (AMS).

K-Pos: Dynamic Positioning OS.

K-Bridge / SIS: Hydrographic Work Stations and Navigation Integrators.6

AutoChief: Main Engine Remote Control System.

Maintenance Tips

SSD Reliability: Because these units use SSDs, they are much more resistant to ship vibration than the older MP7900 units. However, if the system becomes sluggish, check the SSD health as they have a finite write-cycle life in data-heavy automation logs.

CMOS Battery: If the computer fails to boot or loses the system time (which can desync it from the Redundant Net), the CR2032 coin cell battery on the motherboard likely needs replacement.

Dust Accumulation: Despite its “hardened” design, the oversized cooling system can pull in dust from the console. Annual internal cleaning is recommended to prevent CPU throttling.
