About the 5501-465

5501-465

Model 5501-465 is another power supply board, but is specifically designed as a MicroNet Simplex model for the digital control series.

There are specific time delays and wire sizes required when operating the board at a specific input voltage range.

The input voltage range for this board is eighteen to thirty-two volts of direct current, the maximum fuse/c.b rating or the time delay will be fifty amperes; the wire size needed is ten millimeters squared or eight American wire gauge.

Please advise that the wires used must be rated for a minimum of one-hundred sixty-seven degrees Fahrenheit for use at an ambient temperature of ninety-five degrees Fahrenheit.

The 5501-465 board has four LEDs which are, an OK, a power supply fault, an input fault, and an overtemperature LED.

There are some troubleshooting checks that can be performed, one potential error that can occur is the voltages are not correct;

to ensure that the voltages are correct be sure that the provided power supply is in the correct range.

Related Models

The 5437-1067A is typically part of a triple-modular redundant (TMR) system:

8237-1246 / 8237-1369: The main bulkhead or panel-mount assemblies this module fits into.

5437-1078 / 5437-1119: Alternate spare modules with different relay or voltage configurations.

9927-1180: ProTech-GII Service Tool (software for configuration).

Application Cases

Nuclear & Fossil Power Plants: Used as the primary safety barrier for large-scale steam turbines to prevent runaway scenarios.

Mechanical Drive Turbines: Protecting turbines that drive compressors in oil refineries and gas processing plants.

Hydroelectric Dams: Managing the synchronization and emergency shutdown of water turbines.

5437-1067A

Product Advantages and Features

Triple Modular Redundancy (TMR): Operates in a 2-out-of-3 (2oo3) voting logic. This ensures that a single module failure will not cause a nuisance trip or a failure to trip.

On-Line Repair: The modular design allows a single module (like the 5437-1067A) to be replaced while the turbine is running, significantly reducing plant downtime.

Acceleration Protection: Unlike basic overspeed trips, it calculates the rate of speed change (acceleration) to predict and prevent overspeed before it happens.

Integrated Logging: Maintains internal logs for the last 50 trips/alarms and 20 overspeed events with high-resolution timestamps.

Ruggedized Construction: Features sulfur-resistant conformal coating, making it suitable for Class 3C2 corrosive environments.

5437-1067A

Other Models in the Same Series

The ProTech-GII family is distinguished by its mounting and output types:

Bulkhead Mount Series: Designed for wall or skid mounting (e.g., 8237-1246).

Panel Mount Series: Designed for flush-mounting within a control cabinet (e.g., 8237-1600).

Voted Relay vs. Independent Relay: Depending on the model, the relays are either pre-voted internally or output independently to an external safety PLC.

Analog & Discrete Bias: Capable of sending ±10V or 4-20mA signals to speed governors and voltage regulators (AVRs) to force the generator into alignment.3

Microprocessor Precision: Digitally calculates the exact moment to send the “Close” signal to the breaker, accounting for the inherent mechanical delay of the circuit breaker itself.

User-Friendly HMI: The front-facing LCD and push-buttons allow for easy commissioning without the absolute need for a laptop in the field.

8440-1706 A SPM-D11

Other Models in the Same Series

The SPM-D (Synchronizer Power Manager – Digital) family includes:

SPM-D10: Standard synchronizer (basic version).4

SPM-D11/LSX: Synchronizer with added load-sharing and export control capabilities.5

SPM-D21: A more advanced version designed for two-breaker control (e.g., generator breaker and tie breaker).6

8440-1431: A specific variant of the SPM-D11 series with custom firmware for specialized utility requirements.

Introduction

The Woodward 8440-1706 (SPM-D11) is a robust, microprocessor-based synchronizer that eliminates the human error associated with manual generator paralleling.

7 By continuously monitoring the voltage and frequency of both the generator and the utility bus, it issues corrective commands to the engine’s governor and voltage regulator.

Once the generator is perfectly “in phase,” the SPM-D11 triggers the circuit breaker, ensuring a smooth transition of power.

It is highly valued for its reliability in critical infrastructure where even a minor synchronization error could result in significant equipment damage.

The Woodward 5466-425 delivers critical performance through its closed-loop servo control system.

The core of its operation involves comparing the valve’s actual position (measured by the integrated LVDT/RVDT) to the desired position commanded by the turbine controller.

Any difference (error) between these two signals is amplified and used to drive the actuator—either by porting hydraulic fluid to a piston (in an electro-hydraulic design) or by turning a motor (in a direct drive design).

This continuous correction ensures the valve spool or poppet is positioned with extreme accuracy, resulting in precise fuel flow metering
